History of PGIMER, Chandigarh -:
Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) is a medical research and educational institution located in Chandigarh, India. It was established in 1962 and was originally known as the Postgraduate Medical College and Research Center (PGMCR).
The idea for the institute was first proposed by the then Prime Minister of India, Jawaharlal Nehru, who wanted to create a center of excellence for medical education and research in the country. The institute was set up with the aim of providing high-quality medical education and training, as well as conducting cutting-edge research in various fields of medicine.
The foundation stone of PGIMER was laid by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru on 7th July 1961, and the institute was formally inaugurated on 7th July 1962 by the then President of India, Dr. S. Radhakrishnan. Dr. Tulsi Das was the first Director of the institute.
PGIMER started with just a handful of departments, but over the years, it has expanded to become one of the premier medical institutions in India, with over 50 departments and specialties. It has also been recognized as an Institute of National Importance by the Indian government.
The institute has a long and illustrious history of medical research, with many groundbreaking discoveries made by its faculty and researchers over the years. It has also produced a large number of highly trained and skilled medical professionals who have gone on to make significant contributions to the field of medicine both in India and abroad.
